Life In Job Corps

What is Job Corps really like? What happens after you arrive? What is it like living in a dorm, choosing a trade, attending classes, making friends, following the rules, and preparing for life after the program?

Life in Job Corps: What It’s Really Like to Live, Learn, and Train There is an independent, firsthand guide for young adults considering Job Corps—and for parents and families who want to understand what the experience may actually be like.

Author Jason Himes entered Job Corps as a teenager and lived on campus at the Cascades Job Corps Center in Washington State. More than thirty years later, he looks back on the experience with the perspective of someone who has built a career, managed teams, returned to college, operated his own business, and become an author.

This isn't an official Job Corps handbook or promotional brochure. It's an honest look at the questions prospective students may have before they ever arrive.

Inside, you'll explore topics including:

• Applying to Job Corps and choosing a center
• What to pack and how to prepare
• Arrival, orientation, and the first week
• Dorm rooms, roommates, chores, and residential life
• Cafeteria meals, allowances, laundry, and everyday needs
• Academics, GED preparation, and educational support
• Choosing a career trade that fits your future
• Hands-on vocational training and internships
• Making friends and living with people from different backgrounds
• Recreation, weekends, and getting off campus
• Dating and relationships
• Rules, discipline, peer pressure, and consequences
• Homesickness and adjusting to life away from home
• Graduation and preparing for employment
• Life after Job Corps
• Whether Job Corps may be the right choice for you

Himes also shares the mistakes he made, opportunities he nearly lost, lessons he didn't fully appreciate until adulthood, and what he would do differently if he were entering Job Corps today.

The book concludes with practical checklists for prospective students and parents, questions to ask Admissions, a packing guide, questions to consider when choosing career training, a first-week checklist, and graduation and transition planning.

If you're considering Job Corps, preparing to leave for a center, wondering whether vocational training is right for you, or you're a parent trying to understand what your child may experience, this book was written for you.

The goal is simple: to help you arrive more prepared than the author was.
